DESCRIPTION

Meet Mike, a little guy with a big journey behind him and a whole new world waiting ahead! This approximately 2-year-old Terrier mix (his exact breed is a mystery!) weighs around 20 pounds and is one of a small group of once-stray dogs rescued from the streets of Bakersfield, California, by the Jason Heigl Foundation in Oakley, Utah. When Mike first arrived, the world was a frightening place, and trusting people was something he simply didn’t know how to do. Thankfully, time, patience, and a safe place to land have begun to make a difference. Little by little, Mike is learning that gentle hands can bring good things, that treats are wonderful, and that life with caring humans might just be something worth believing in. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, and crate trained, and now he’s hoping someone special will give him the chance to take the next steps toward a life of his own.

Mike is happiest when he has four-legged friends nearby, and he does well with other small dogs in our kennels. The play yard is one of his favorite places to stretch his legs and enjoy being a dog, and he also appreciates getting out for leashed walks. When the world feels a little overwhelming, his crate offers a familiar retreat where he can relax and feel secure. Mike hasn’t had the opportunity to live in a home yet, so his future family will need to help him learn everyday routines, including consistent potty habits. He’ll need someone who understands that a dog who has spent his early life surviving on the streets may need extra time to feel safe enough to truly let his guard down. For now, secure surroundings, a watchful eye, and always keeping him leashed outdoors are essential, as fear could cause him to bolt before he fully trusts his new environment.

What Mike needs most is a person who can see past his initial shyness and recognize the potential for a wonderful companion. He may not be the dog who rushes into your arms on day one, but earning his trust will make every little milestone that much sweeter. A patient foster-to-forever home or a committed adopter, especially one with a kind small-dog companion, could help Mike discover the comforts of home at his own pace. With compassionate guidance, predictable routines, and plenty of delicious treats along the way, this deserving boy has every opportunity to grow in confidence and show the world who he really is. Mike has already made it through so much; now he just needs someone willing to believe in him and give him the time he needs to shine. He is available to adopt in Utah.
