It's been a tough week for us here at the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation. It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Heigl Hound of Hope Vanilla. Rescuing animals is not easy. If love were all it takes to heal a dog, you can bet none of our rescues would ever die. Vanilla was a very special dog and she will be greatly missed.
We have a chance to win a $100,000 grant, but we need your help! What do we need from you? It's simple: share your story of love! The Petco Foundation wants to hear your adoption story. If your story is selected you'll win a $1000 gift card and we will be able to save even more lives.
The support of the general public and the generosity of the business community is vital in ensuring that the Jason Heigl Foundation can continue to help thousands of companion animals every year. So we were thrilled and very grateful to receive a wonderful donate from our friends at Komfy K9's, who have generously supplied some wonderful bedding and blankets for our rescues!
In California City, a remote rural town about two hours north of Los Angeles, there is a small animal shelter that operates on extremely limited resources. With a very tight budget, staff work hard to look after the animals in their care. Like many community oriented shelters, the facility is heavily reliant on the tireless efforts of volunteers. We decided to help them out and our partners at Cat's Pride delivered in a big way!
Vanilla was rescued from a high-skill shelter in desperate need of medical care. Emaciated from a chronic illness which prevented her jaw from opening and with tumors on her abdomen, she was clinging to life. 7 weeks later she has gained 10lbs, but for all the progress made, unfortunately her tumors have gotten worse and require surgery. However, Vanilla is a dog simply not willing to give up!
When Keaton, a young Shepard mix, initially came into the shelter, he was unable to use his front limb. The shelter staff assumed he had been hit by a car, but shockingly x-rays revealed that Keaton had been shot and the bullet was still in his body. The bullet has shattered the bone and surgeons are now fighting to try and save his leg from amputation.
